SynthID Results: Detected, Not Detected, and Unclear

Google’s official SynthID Detector at synthid.com answers a narrow question: did this file show a SynthID watermark signal under the tool’s current conditions? Outcomes are useful provenance notes — not courtroom-grade proof that media is AI-made or human-made. This guide explains each outcome, with special focus on unclear results that teams often mishandle.

The three outcomes in plain language

Outcome What it means What it does not mean
Detected The official tool reported a SynthID watermark signal on this file. Not a complete story about ownership, accuracy, consent, or how you should label the piece for readers.
Not detected No SynthID watermark was found under current conditions. Not proof of human authorship. Many AI pipelines never apply SynthID; edits can also weaken signals.
Unclear The check was inconclusive — the tool could not confidently say present or absent. Not a “50% AI” score. Do not invent certainty either way.

Why “unclear” happens

Rule: Treat unclear as “needs more work,” not as a soft suspicion of AI. Log it, ask for a better original, and add other provenance before publish.

What to do next (by outcome)

  1. Detected

Log filename, date, checker, and tool. Apply your disclosure / review policy. Still verify context — watermark ≠ “safe to publish without review.”

  2. Not detected

Do not write “cleared / human / authentic.” Request the earliest original if you only have a social export. Add reverse search, source notes, and judgment. See not detected ≠ human.

  3. Unclear

Re-check with the least-compressed original when policy allows. Note “unclear” in your audit trail. Escalate contested assets; don’t burn the daily quota on near-duplicates. Quota help: daily limit guide.

  4. Batch days

When you have many files, triage contested items first. For a structured Detected / Not detected / Unclear table from official checks, see optional Batch Report ($9.99) and sample report. We document official-detector outcomes — we do not run a private Google clone.

Don’t confuse SynthID with other signals

Quick FAQ

What does an unclear SynthID result mean?

The official tool could not confidently report present or absent. It is not a percentage “AI score.” Seek a better file and other provenance.

Does “detected” prove the content is AI?

It means a SynthID watermark signal was reported. Treat it as a strong provenance clue and still apply context and policy.

Does “not detected” prove the content is human?

No. Absence of SynthID does not prove human authorship.

Where should I run the free check?

Only on Google’s official product: synthid.com. Quotas and UI can change — trust the live product.

Start with a free official check, then add a documented report if your desk or brand team needs a batch trail.
